Looking into the mirror, I adjusted my black tuxedo and ascot tie. Then, I combed my hair back once more and looked into my own green eyes, bright with anticipation.
“Well, well, don’t you look gorgeous,” Drake Summerfield teased as he crossed the room and looked into the mirror behind me.
“Thanks, Drake,” I said, smiling, “but I don’t think gorgeous is the right word.”
“No, dapper is more the word, but it seemed inadequate.” He returned the smile. “Are you sure this is what you want? To marry Leila?”
“More sure than anything.” I pulled the front of my jacket down, adjusting it once again even though it didn’t need it.
“Well, she could always become a vampire for you,” he said, matter of fact. Drake and I were both vampires. I was the head of the North Coven and he was the head of the South Coven, but we have been friends for what seemed like an eternity.
“No, she doesn’t,” I replied, my eyes suddenly flaring.
“Then, how do you think you’ll manage it?” Drake asked.
“One day at a time.”
“You love her very much, do you not?” When it was just the two of us with no humans around, we tended to let down our guard and slipped into our older vernacular.
“Yes, I do. Over all of my years, I have never met anyone like her before,” I said, as my mind drifted back over the centuries. “Where has the time gone, Drake?”
“I don’t know, but the only ones who are getting older are the children,” Drake joked.
“Luckily,” I replied, laughing. There were many drawbacks, but that was one perk of being a vampire—you don’t age. I was turned when I was thirty-three and I haven’t aged a day since.
“Well, I think it’s time that I retrieve your lovely bride,” Drake said, looking at his watch. Then, he glanced up at me with a gleam in his eyes. “If you aren’t at the altar when we get there, I will marry her myself.”
“Like hell you will,” I replied. “I’ve waited a long time for this.”
Drake laughed. “Yes, you have.” He clasped my shoulder, then pulled me in for a quick man hug. “Congratulations, you lucky bastard.”
“Hey, now, leave my mother out of this,” I joked.
He laughed as he walked down the hallway toward the room where Leila waited.
I took a deep breath, not sure why I was suddenly nervous. I hadn’t been nervous in centuries, but here it was, rearing its ugly head.
“Ready?” A voice asked from the other end of the hallway. I turned and it was Kellen Tussand, with his dark wavy hair and muscled good looks, wearing a tuxedo. He looked young, despite his being a vampire. In fact, I turned him when he was twenty-five. Looking at him now, he hadn’t aged at ll since that day, even though he was centuries old.
Kellen and I had become friends and he was dying on the battlefield toward the end of the Revolutionary War, so I carried him to a nearby cave. I gave him my blood and sat with him as he died. Then, I gave him my blood after he awakened, turning him into a vampire. But that was long ago and he has been a trusted member of my coven ever since.
After my best friend and colleague Charlotte St. Claire had betrayed me and had nearly killed Leila and the baby, Kellen had helped to stop the vampire werewolf war, so I gave him the job as my personal assistant, in charge of my affairs. We were friends before, but now we were
closer and I trusted him with my life. Even though Charlotte had betrayed me, I refused to let that prevent me from trusting others. It was an isolated incident. The thought of it pains me, when I allow myself to dwell on it. I trust the people around me until they do something that made them untrustworthy. Then, I never trust them again. Trust and loyalty are big issues with me. Anyone who knows me, knows that.
“Well, Lance,” Kellen said, clasping my shoulder. “Your bride awaits.”
A broad smile spread across my face as I forced the memories from my head. This was the happiest day of my life and I intended to enjoy it. “After you,” I said, gesturing to him, then I followed him out.

New Release! Parker's Proceedings

OUT NOW!

The fabulous new novel by Genevieve Scholl launches today. To celebrate, let's take a look at the novel in some closer detail.

~

~

A slam dunk case of lust

Ashlee Rosenthal just hit the big 4-0, and life is as boring as watching paint dry. She’s a lawyer, which she loves, her son is grown and moved out, she hasn’t seen a movie in the cinemas in almost a decade, and her friendships are limited to a best friend half way across the country, a quirky assistant who talks faster than a freight train, and a chinchilla who thinks the countertops in her kitchen are its own personal bedroom.
Just as she’s contemplating doing something drastic and crazy in able to get some excitement in her life, Parker Bensley, a 20-something professional basketball player, walks into her office to file for divorce from his wife, and Ashlee’s libido is standing up and taking notice for the first time in forever. But he’s her client, and it would be considered a conflict of interest for her to feel anything toward him. So she shuts down her sexy thoughts and focuses on the case.
Until Parker makes the first move, and everything she had done to ensure she never compromised the case is thrown out the window. Ashlee knows it’s all kinds of wrong, but, damn, does it feel oh-so-good.

My heart skips a beat at the generosity of this man, but my mind wonders what sort of career he has to not need twenty-thousand dollars. His clothes don’t look extraordinarily expensive, so I doubt he’s any kind of lawyer, doctor, or professor. Still, he does look a little familiar in a weird way, but I can’t place him. Instead of wracking my brain to figure out where I’ve seen him before, I do what I always do and show my worst trait—at least, according to Amy and Dorothy.
“What do you do for a living?” I ask bluntly.
Parker looks temporarily taken aback, like he’s never been asked that question before. “You mean you don’t recognize me?” he asks, confirming my suspicions.
“You look familiar, but I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head.”
He chuckles. “Well, that’s new. I’ve never had someone not recognize me before. It’s sort of refreshing.” I laugh, and he smiles at me over the desk. “I play for the Heat.”
The admission shocks me. I knew he looked familiar, but I hadn’t expected him to say he was a professional basketball player in Miami.

Author Legalese

Legal Issues

As authors, whether Traditional, Indie or Self-Published, it's our responsibility to know what we're doing and to abide by the laws and legal rules of our chosen profession. In this post, I'll be addressing some of the commonly mis-interpreted or confusing issue that we will face during our careers.
Most of this should be common sense, but I'm sad to say that I've seen plenty of smart, famous authors, illegally using photographers or celebrities images in their promo work. This is illegal and can get you sued, if the photographer/celebrity finds out. And they will.
Trust me, it's not worth the risk. Once you have to face something like that, your reputation can be ruined. It may seen harmless, but it's really not and it only takes one mistake to cause chaos.
Before we get started, you might want to read this document or save it. It's Permissions Guidelines for Authors, by John Wiley & Sons, which is a global publishing company.

Music

Music is one of those dangerous and tricky tools that can get you into a lot of trouble, and it won't always be your fault. Sites like Animoto supply music for all different genres, for a monthly subscription. This can be invaluable when making a super amazing book trailer. However, when some artists get famous, they remove their work from Animoto and that's where you an face problems. When you upload to YouTube, they're so smart that they'll warn you if there's a legal issue with your music. YouTube and Animoto have a great relationship and can warn you about this, so always take notice of any warnings they give you.
When you make a book trailer with Music Maker, however, you don't get those warnings and you have to be responsible for what you're doing and what music you're using. There are a bunch of sites that you can buy music from, for a subscription, or you can download from for free, as long as you credit the artist and song in your video. Which, should be good practice.
No matter where you get your music, free or not, it's common courtesy to credit the artist and song.

~

Videos

Videos are basically the same as music. There are a lot of sites where you can get moving clips or just images for free or at a cost, for your book trailer. Be careful, remain vigilant and read all the legal rules of the website, before you use anything. Then, simply add a 'Credits' page at the end, so you can credit the website/artist or designer.
Simple. :)

Quotes

There are different rules for Quoting a book/author/poet and they can get a bit tricky, so I'm going to get some help here.

"The discussion for copyright of text and music lyrics is similar to that of images and graphics, but they are not exactly parallel. With a graphic or image, you’re likely using the entire work, whereas with text or music lyrics you’re only using a portion. It is much more clear that using an entire text or reproducing the full music lyrics would violate copyright, the question now becomes how much can be used so that you’re not.
Traditional publishers may have guidelines, but they’re also willing to defend them if challenged. For self-published authors, being sued for using “too much” of a work may not be a risk worth taking.
Of course, there is still the ability to ask for a license before using the work if you are concerned with the legalities of using copyrighted material. There is, also, Fair Use. However, as was mentioned with regard to images and graphics, it’s not a clearly defined exception.
Unlike the discussion above, though, with text or music lyrics you’re likely only using a portion of the work so there is a stronger argument with regard to the quantity of the work used. Nonetheless, Fair Use goes beyond just a “word count” and you must be able to establish that your use does not interfere with the owner’s rights."

"You do not need permission to include song titles, movie titles, TV show titles—any kind of title—in your work. You can also include the names of places, things, events, and people in your work without asking permission. These are facts.
Because songs and poems are so short, it’s dangerous to use even 1 line without asking for permission, even if you think the use could be considered fair. However, it’s fine to use song titles, poem titles, artist names, band names, movie titles, etc.
The law does not offer any percentage or word count here that we can go by. That’s because if the portion quoted is considered the most valuable part of the work, you may be violating fair use. That said, most publishers’ guidelines for authors offer a rule of thumb; at the publisher I worked at, that guideline was 200-300 words from a book-length work in a teaching/educational context."

~

Images

This is a really sticky one, because I see authors illegally using images for promo posters and covers, on a daily basis. I've seen a self-published book with a famous actor on the front cover, selling on Amazon. They rendered it on the computer, as though that would disguise the actor, but it didn't. Some add wings, hats, glasses, some form of disguise. Others blatantly use a celebrity in promo posts.
So what are the rules? Well, if yo're doing a character casting, yes, you can use an actor/actresses image. Label the actor/actress and state which character in your book that you'd want them to play. That's allowed.
Using a celebrities face or easily identifiable tattoo/logo/feature on a cover or promo poster is NOT legal. You can be sued.
The same goes for using photographer's work. Unless you have their express permission to use the picture or they supply free downloads on a site like DeviantArt, you can't use the image. In the case that you do have permission or a free LEGAL download, then you should always credit the photographer on the promo poster or in the credits of the book cover.
And here's a last one that might help: Legal Issues in Self-Publishing: What Authors Need to Know

RESOURCES

Free & Paid

(Please check individual sites and conditions, for payment options. Most are free, but often have paid features.)

Photo Editors

Pixteller - supplies images and fonts. You cannot use your own fonts, but there are clipart images you can add. The site also saves your posters as Private or Public, as to your preference. You can also go back to your poster and change it, if you notice a mistake or change your mind. You don't have to pay anything.

Pixlr - Also free, this one gives you more options than Pixteller. You can add layers, create 3D images and do a whole host of things that I haven't learned to do yet. You can check out their blog, for all the great ways you can use this site.

Ribbet - You can register for this site, which used to allow you a free account. They've now made it that you have to pay for an upgrade to get all the fancy extras. However, the free version is great on its own and it allows you to use your own fonts. As an author, I collect free fonts so that each project is unique. (You can get some awesome fonts here at 1001 Fonts and Hongkiat.)

PicMonkey - This is my preferred site. My publisher has the 'premier' account, which is awesome, but you can also get some amazing features on the free account. You can use their fonts or your own and your own layers. You can also use all of their extras and effects.

Author Interview: Cecilia London

Author Interview:
Cecilia London
·        What is the title of your book?
I have two books out now: Dissident and Conscience. They are the first two releases in a planned six part series, the Bellator Saga.

Please tell us a little bit about your book.
They’re romance novels, but they’re not. It’s complicated, LOL. They’ve been described as political dystopian intellectual smut, but they’re maybe a little bit more than that.

If you like Scandal or House of Cards, if you still miss President Bartlet and yearn for The West Wing, or if you like speculative fiction and epic romance, you’ll love this story. You might even enjoy it if you like historical romance or crossovers like Outlander. It has well-developed side characters, witty banter and fresh dialogue, and a realistic, relatable hero and heroine. And if you also want a ton of hot sex in your books, then…we’re all set. You need to pick this series up now.

Our hero, Jack, is a millionaire. And a playboy. And a politician. And a silver fox. But he’s more than just a trope, too. He’s an incredibly sexy, sensitive, and devotedly alpha male.

When we first meet our heroine, Caroline, she is a Democratic member of Congress who has to apologize to Jack after saying some none too charitable things about him during the past campaign. A friendship and more is born…and the reader gets a glimpse into the beginning of her relationship with Jack in the first two books. Caroline ends up having to demonstrate tremendous strength and resolve as the books progress. She is definitely the heart of the series.

How did you come up with your book idea?
I’ve had the main players in my head for years, but it wasn’t until a bout of mild food poisoning and a hazy dream that I came up with the idea for the book series. So, thank you, tainted BBQ?

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
That’s hard to say. Obviously there are some deeper themes in the series. About power and privilege and what we do with those advantages, about love and forgiveness, and about spending more time holding our government accountable for its behavior. So while those issues are there and probably need to be addressed/reflected upon, there’s also an incredible love story and really hot sex scenes to go with them. ;)

If your book became a movie, what would your ideal cast be?
I have such a hard time with this one. I don’t really picture my characters as real people, though many readers have taken it upon themselves to draw up their vision of Jack or Caroline. My ideal Jack is a model named Laurence Nicotra (go ahead…Google him…I’ll wait.), but I can’t really put faces to any of the other characters.

What are your publishing credits?
Dissident and Conscience are my first two published works to date. There are four more books in the series: Sojourn, Phoenix, Rhapsody, and Triumph.

What are your plans for the future?

I would love to be able to write full-time, as I have many ideas for standalone novels inside my head. But my focus is on finishing up this series, for now.

What is your day job?
I am not currently practicing, but I am a licensed attorney. I’m sure I’ll go back to that eventually.

What is your preferred genre to write?
I adore writing romance and erotica. The flirty banter, the verbal foreplay, the creative ways that characters can find to demonstrate their affection for one another. But I also enjoy the speculative fiction/thriller aspects of the series I’m writing. I think I’d have a hard time writing straight genre fiction. There would have to be a love story in order for me to enjoy what I was doing.

How did you become a writer?
I started writing when I was a kid. True story: when I was little I dreamed of being a lawyer…and I also dreamed of being a writer. I feel so fortunate to have lived both my dreams.

Are you a planner, complete with detailed outlines, or do you fly by the seat of your pants when writing?
I write completely out of order, though the entire storyline is usually in my head or written down somewhere. I have been writing all the books simultaneously, which makes it easier to go back and fill in the blanks to make sure that all of the story arcs connect and flow properly. I have absolutely no method to my madness, which is perhaps a method in itself. Not everyone can write that way, but it works for me.

What is the best writing advice that you have ever been given?
Just do it. That’s all. Oh, and several authors who are now friends have encouraged me not to be shy, to feel confident in my abilities and comfortable asking for help. This isn’t a huge industry, and it’s important to have different support people from every aspect of the process (beta readers, fellow authors, bloggers, etc.).

What advice would you give a new writer?
Don’t give up. I have my bad days. We all do. But remember that you have a voice and you have a product and someone out there wants to read it!

What other projects do you have in the works at the moment?
I’ve got ideas for a few contemporary romances as well as a couple of dystopian reads. We’ll see how they pan out. I have to finish the Bellator Saga before I get cracking on them.

What surprises can we expect from you in the future?
If I told you, they wouldn’t be a surprise. ;)

If you could journey into any of your books, interacting with the characters, which would it be and why?
I don’t care if it sounds tasteless. I would love to sleep with Jack. What a sexy man.

What are you reading?
Right now I’m reading First Time by Abigail Barnette/Jenny Trout. I’ve been slacking off on reading lately with editing and writing, but I need to make more time to just relax with my Kindle. It helps me refocus.

What’s the most amusing thing that’s happened to you while you were writing this story?
My fictional characters have hidden chocolate bars from me. I’m not kidding. I bought a Ghirardelli bar in honor of my heroine’s best friend (Christine, who is my favorite person in the saga) and it just disappeared from the pantry. Apparently she wanted it more than I did.

What public appearances do you have planned in the future?
I haven’t booked any yet, but I’m thinking about RT in Vegas. Maybe some local stuff. We’ll see.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate. Always chocolate.

What is your favorite drink?
Moscato. Did you mean booze? Either way, Moscato.

Who is your dream man and why?
Obligatory “my husband and my son are the cutest men ever” canned answer. Does that work? ;)

See also: Laurence Nicotra.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
Thank you so much for reading! Or if you’re new to my work, Dissident is free right now. If you think you might enjoy some political dystopian intellectual smut, pick up a copy. Or follow me on Twitter, friend me on Facebook, whatever. Let’s chat.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Cecilia London is my pen name. I am a native Midwesterner who never thought I'd end up in Texas and yet here I am, determined to help Keep San Antonio Lame. I have been known to dabble in the practice of law. I can apply Simpsons quotes to everyday life, and I live for baseball season.  I've been writing off and on since I was a kid, but never really thought I’d have any idea that could turn into a single novel, let alone a series. There aren't many books about how dystopias/totalitarian political regimes come into existence, and I wanted to touch upon that topic while still maintaining a primary focus on the epic romance. Dissident and the Bellator Saga are my first foray into self-publishing.
