Author Interview: Theresa Troutman

Author Interview: Theresa Troutman

What is the title of your book?
By My Side

Please tell us a little bit about your book.
By My Side is an erotic second-chance romance.

Maybe its not what youre running from, but what youre running toward.

Alicia travels to an exotic land, with hopes to reinvent herself. She moves to Auckland, New Zealand, to heal and escape her unhappy past in America.

Hunter works in a bar to distract himself from the memory of a tragic past. Playing in a local band and resorting to one night stands are his only means for an escape from his reality.

Brought together by circumstance, an unexpected romance blossoms between these two tortured souls.

Can being by each other’s side bring them the happiness they are desperate to discover? Or will being together break their fragile trust and lead to more heartache?

How did you come up with your book idea?
I love to travel and wanted to incorporate the beautiful island of New Zealand into one of my stories. I also wanted to show some of the exotic flavor of the country with its landscape and people.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
You should embrace life and not be afraid. Take a chance, even if it seems like the most far-fetched idea. You never know where your life will lead you if you dont take the first step in your journey.

What are your publishing credits?
My published works include: The Loves Great Adventure Series: Lifes What You Make It (free download!) Love This Life and London Loves; My Secret Summer and A Special Connection. I also write taboo erotica as T.S. Irons.

What are your plans for the future?
Keep writing stories with a happy ending! My dream is to be able to be a full time writer.

What is your day job?
Im an office manager

What is your preferred genre to write?
Romance including Young Adult, New Adult, Adult Contemporary and Erotic Romance

How did you become a writer?
Ive been writing since I was a teenager. Its something I always loved. When I lost my job two years ago, I decided to publish my first book.

Are you a planner, complete with detailed outlines, or do you fly by the seat of your pants when writing?
Planner. I plot out and tend to write in order. Sometimes as a scene comes to mind, Ill write it and will insert it into the story later.

What is the best writing advice that you have ever been given?
Write what you love and write for yourself. If you are happy with our work, readers will find you.

What advice would you give a new writer?
Dont expect success overnight. It takes years of hard work to build your back list and gain a following. You need to be tough and keep at it.

What other projects do you have in the works at the moment?
Im currently working on book 4 in The Loves Great Adventure Series.

What surprises can we expect from you in the future?
More naughty erotica as T.S. Iron

If you could journey into any of your books, interacting with the characters, which would it be and why?
Sebastian and Tess from The Loves Great Adventure Series. The series is about friendship, family, loyalty, and love. I value all of these characteristics. I also like how Sebastian transforms from a British bad boy to an amazing man. I love Tess because she is strong and focused and doesnt give up when things get tough.

What are you reading?
Half-Soul by Katherine Rhodes

What public appearances do you have planned in the future?
I will be attending Virginia is For Romance, Oct. 3; Sexy and Sassy in the South in North Carolina, Oct 24; and Philly Author Fest, Nov.14. More scheduled for 2016 and 2017!

Chocolate or vanilla?
Both

What is your favorite drink?
Diet Coke

Who is your dream man and why?
Sebastian Irons because I created him. Hes perfectly imperfect! I love his fierce love of family and friends and how he cares about his wife and child. He puts them above everything.

Is there anything else youd like to share with your fans?
I love interacting and hearing what they have to say about my books. I have a Facebook reader group they can check out! https://www.facebook.com/groups/860433074038055/

Plotting Against You

Do you ever find yourself in the midst of writing a story and you suddenly realise that you're going down the really obvious route?

Never happened to you? Or happens all the time?

Personally, it happens all the time, to me. I often have to sit there and second guess my need to travel that route. Most of the time, with just one or two small re-writes, you can go the non-obvious track, without having to re-do your entire manuscript. Sometimes you don't even have to re-write anything, because it's a simple matter of revealing the "surprise" and then explaining it in a way that absolutely makes sense.

I've done this twice, in a book I was editing recently. It's not a Simply Sexy Reads book, but one for teens. I had a bad guy about to be revealed and just as I was about to reveal their name, at the moment then the teens finally found out who was causing all the trouble, I stopped and realised it was far too obvious. I'd written the entire book, building up to the reveal of this certain character - let's call them Character A for now - as the bad guy. But then, as I was about to write the name, I realised that I wanted to make it a shock. That I wanted to go really out there and choose someone who the reader would never expect, Character B. Character A could be the decoy; the one so obvious that it would make absolutely no sense for them to really be the bad guy. But, when the revelation that it's really Character B comes out, it's a shock factor and the reader begins to wonder how they never saw it coming.

That's a much better way to go.

I did the same thing with a romance, in the same book. I'd had the set up practically perfect - the two characters (C and D) became best friends through book 1 and 2, then had hints of getting really close in book 2, before finally revealing in book 3 that they were a couple. UNTIL I realised that they didn't fit, at all. Character C was way too innocent and non-romantic for Character D, who was a real romantic and a little too feisty for C. So, I switched it up in book 3, revealing the shocking surprise that Character D was actually going to end up with Character E, who was Character C's twin!

Most of the time, I'd say that it's perfectly fine to follow the plot where you'd always planned to take it. But not in this case. Sometimes, when it's really obvious, you have to switch it up, to offer your readers something that they didn't see coming. In the end, it might not work. But you'll have tried it and you can know that the obvious route was the right one.

Or, it will be fantastic! My two changes read so much better, now that they're not at all obvious. What will readers think? Who knows. Maybe they'll have seen it coming, maybe they won't, but I'll know that it was the route less travelled, when plotting out my story.

The biggest tip here is to listen to your characters. The romantic love interest changed, because my characters were telling me it wasn't right. And some instinct, whether plot or character driven, made me stop and second guess writing that 'bad guy's' name down, while writing the big revelation scene.

Don't be afraid to change your mind and don't be scared of scrapping an entire chapter or two, if it makes your story better. In the end, you'll know what works and what doesn't, when you read your story like a reader. That's when I do my best editing. Get away from it for a while, come back fresh, and you'll see whether your changes work or not.

Either way, you'll have taken the risk of finding out.

How to: use Picmonkey

Picmonkey is one of those invaluable sources, when you're an author who needs to make multiple teaser posters for your book. Pixteller has one feature that I wish Picmonkey had, which I'll cover in a later post : they save your posters, so that you can go back and tweak them later, if necessary. For example, if a month has passed and you suddenly spot a spelling mistake/wrong name/grammar mistake in your teaser, you can go back to Pixteller to change it, without having to remake the entire poster, and effects. Picmonkey can't do that. But it can do so much more...

Unfortunately, most of the options are "Try it and See". Each option looks differently on each image, so please remember that what works on one image might not work on another. This is especially true when taking quality and visibility into account. Some images with detail can become too dark or blurred using certain options.

WARNING: There are two versions of this. The free and the premium. I have access to the premium account and will be showing you what that can do, to cover everything Picmonkey has to offer, but don't worry! If you want to use the free version, the Premium items are marked with their monkey, wearing a crown.

~

First off, let's start with the menu. It can get a little confusing, if you've never used it before.

Here's a screenshot of their home page:

Now, if you want to add effects and text to a picture, hover over "Edit" and you'll see this -

Then, you simply choose a picture and edit it (as I'll explain how to do later.)

If you choose "Touch Up", you'll see this -

And "Design" will give you this -

"Collage" will show you this -

~

I know, they all look basically the same. But, they do give you a good idea of what each option will do for you, which is the important part. Also - personally - I've never used Touch Up, because you have all those options within the "Edit" option anyway. "Edit" and "Touch Up" are the only two that are inter-changeable. You can click one and access the options of the other. Also, if you've already chosen a picture you want to adapt and then realise that you really want to use the "Design" blank canvas option, you can do that in "Edit", without leaving and starting from the homepage.

But we'll come back to that later.

Let's choose a picture.

~

I'm going to choose the "Edit" option, with a picture found on a free-to-use website, Pixabay. Here's the original -

To start, I'm going to show you how to adapt the colour/effects of this picture, to create something unique. Because, let's face it, a free picture of this good quality is going to be snapped up and used by anyone who knows where to look. So whatever you do to it has to make your poster stand out amongst the rest.

~

This is your basic "Edit" page, but it has a lot of offshoots, so brace yourself for a lot of screenshots. :)

What do these do? Simple and they're mostly self-explanatory, but let's cover them anyway. Click on the box you want (the one with the word and picture) and you'll see the option it offers. NOTE: You can only open one at a time, but feel free to play around with them. The third and fourth buttons from the left, on the grey bar, are the Undo and Redo buttons:

~

But here's what they do:

Crop - in the drop down menu, they have set sizes. If you know what size you want, try that first. Or you can type in the pixel size you want into the Actual Size boxes. As with all of the options Picmonkey offers, it will only be made if you click "Apply". Don't click it and the picture will go back to how it looked, before you clicked that option box. Or, click "Cancel".

Canvas Color - this is where you can move between editing a picture and starting anew. If your picture isn't going well and you decide it would work better as a layer, then simply click Canvas Color and choose a background colour, then click apply. BUT: This will UNDO anything you've previously done, so be careful with this one.

Sharpen - change the sharpness and clarity of your picture.

Rotate - as it says: you can rotate your image any way you want, but if you want to do in-between options, then you only get that choice on a layer. There's a little circle, when you click on the layer, that allows you to turn it any way you want. This also works for Text, so don't worry about having to use this option for that.

Resize - great, if you know what size you want your picture to be. But be careful - some images can distort and become pixellated if you enlarge or reduce it too much. Always try to keep an eye on the quality of the image.

Exposure - this one is a good option if you have a really dark picture that you want to lighten, but mostly you can do that with effects, so I tend not to use this one too much. As I said before, playing around with the choices will help you become familiar with whether you need to/want to use them or not.

Colors - this is similar to "Exposure". It's not one that you really have to touch, unless you're dealing with a dark/difficult picture, where the colours aren't as clear as you want them. Again, try it and see how you feel about it.

~

Next, we move on to "Effects", which has a really long list of options that would take way too much space to show here. Feel free to explore to your hearts extent. Here are a few that I love -

You'll have to try most of these for yourself, to see what they do and how the effect changes your image. Some images look great with just one or two effects, some don't need any and some need a lot of work. It's all up to you, at this point.

Here's an example of Orton, then Rapture and Bokeh Shapes (in that order) being used on the sample image:

~

Next up, we have the "Touch Up" options and "Text", both of which are fairly simple options.

The touch up options are only possible on a picture, not a layer. But we'll come back to that in a minute. That little butterfly logo is where you'll find the layouts, so we'll talk about layers there. But, to make an effect work on a layer, you have to make it part of the overall picture. I'd suggest you do this last, because you can't undo it and then keep moving your layer. So, if you're not entirely sure where you want your layer, wait until you've figured that out, before applying your effect to it.

Also, the text on offer are pretty awesome. Just click the font you want, then click "Add Text" and you'll get a window appearing on your picture, where you can add your text. If you have a font you want to use, already installed on your computer, that Picmonkey don't have, then you have the option to use it, by clicking "Yours". If it doesn't work, you can click "Ours" to go back to the fonts Picmonkey offer.

~

Layers:

The Overlays on option are great! You can get stars, hearts, shapes, ribbon, tape and so much more. Explore the options and try them out. You can change the colour, size and effect of each, with the drop down menu provided on each layer.

Each option: Add, Darken etc: will change how the layer appears. If it's not a vector (with a blank background, like this layer) then choose 'darken' and it's likely to make the layer blend into the background image a little better. But it's not a guarantee, so always try the other options and see how it turns out.

To "bind" a layer to the background image, check out the grey bar again.

That little icon, second from the right, is your "combine all image elements" option. This will merge ALL layers, overlays, text and more into the background. That means that, once you merge them, you CANNOT move your text, effects, layers, overlays or anything! So many sure you're certain about what you're doing. It can be undone, but it will undo anything you did after the merge, as well.

If you want, you can merge at different stages, save and then undo the merge.

The "Frames" option is simple, too, so I won't bore you with the details. It goes around the edges of the picture, not in the middle, so if you want a frame in the middle of the picture, perhaps to frame an object or your text, then use the layers/overlays option instead.

Example of a frame:

~

The last two menus are Textures and Themes, two of my favourites. Not only do they provide unique and brilliant options, to make your images special, but they bundle similar options together, so that they're really easy to find. If you're doing a vampire teaser, then choose the Vampire tab, the same for Witches, Demons etc.

Textures will add the texture to the background of your image, like so. I used the metal option, to make it more obvious as an example. I used the "lighten" choice on the drop down menu, to keep it simple and still show the effect.

There are others that you can use, but now I'm going to show you the Themes options. For this picture, I get a vampire vibe, so I'll use the Vampire tab and use the blood options.

~

So, now that I've shown you the options for "Edit" and "Touch Up", we'll go ahead and venture into the other two menu items:

"Design" is exactly the same as above, only that you start with a blank canvas and add layers. You can then merge them, when you're ready. There's nothing different about the "Design" option, in terms of the tabs and side menu's. It's all exactly the same.

~

"Collage" is a different matter altogether. Here's how you start. On this page:

Choose which option you want to use, to get your pictures from. I'll use Computer. In this option, you can choose multiple images to add to your collage. Even if you're not sure about them, you can add them and you don't have to use them all.

I'm going to add a bunch of free-to-use images to an option, to show you. Here's what you'll see:

Now, on the left are your options for changing the layout of the white boxes on the right.

In order, they are:
Images
Layouts
Swatches
Background

In Images, you'll see what pictures you've uploaded. When you add one to the collage, it will show a tick in the bottom corner. You also have the option to "Remove Unused" images, if you change your mind, or want to remove images you didn't need.

Layouts, helps you change the number of boxes and the layout of where they sit.

Swatches offer background images that can be placed into the boxes. But, if you add a swatch into a box, you can't add a picture into that same box. And, the swatch will not become a background to your entire collage. Only for the individual box.

Background is where you can expand or limit the spaces between boxes, add a colour to the background, round the edges to the boxes or even make the background transparent (transparent backgrounds are great, if you need a vector)

~

So, here's your final collage, with the images I uploaded and two of the swatches on offer, as well as a colour background. Once you've done this and saved your design, you can then go back to the main menu, using the white X on the top right corner, and choose the "Edit" option to add text and layers, if needed.

~

VOILA!

You're done. You have a great image, with text, layers and whatever else you wanted to add. I hope you had fun.

Don't be scared to share your image with us. We'd love to see what you made.

Author Interview: Kassandra Wylde

Author Interview: Kassandra Wylde

What is the title of your book?
Fantasies of a Cuckquean

Please tell us a little bit about your book.
The story is about a loving, committed married couple that decides to have a threesome. Rather than it being the husband’s idea, it was the wife’s – and her reason for the request is because she gets sexual pleasure from watching him with another woman.

How did you come up with your book idea?
Most erotica on this subject focuses on the male side, where a wife humiliates the husband by sleeping around and he gets pleasure from it. This is the gender opposite, and I felt it important to delve into the female psyche and show the thought process behind a woman with this fetish.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Not all men want to cheat; some have to be talked into it. A kind, caring, loving husband will often move mountains to fulfill his wife’s fantasies.

If your book became a movie, what would your ideal cast be?
If my series became a movie, it would be made up of multiple short vignettes that highlighted the diversity of background, education, race, and age among the women who have this fetish. It would help to remove the stigma against women with fetishes in general, to foster open communication on the subject of fantasy fulfillment, and change the long-held, misogynistic view of what’s normal.

What are your publishing credits?
I have written and self-published five erotic romance/erotica titles over the past year, one of which being a standalone full-length novel under a different pen name.

What are your plans for the future?
To keep writing tales of love and lust among happily married committed couples.

What is your day job?
I’m a professional within the writing industry.

What is your preferred genre to write?
Erotic romance. Erotic pleasures without love fall flat for me. Also, beyond just genre, I don’t enjoy erotic shorts. All of my books are longer, more complete stories rather than just one romp in the sheets.

How did you become a writer?
I have always been a writer. I started writing stories as soon as I learned how to hold a pencil. They may have looked like scribbles to my parents, but they were full stories in my head.

Are you a planner, complete with detailed outlines, or do you fly by the seat of your pants when writing?
I have to work from a (very) loose outline for full-length novels, but find they’re too constricting for my erotic novellas. For those, I have a strong idea of who the characters are, and then I just let their story flow organically.

What is the best writing advice that you have ever been given?
Just write. Don’t think about it, don’t judge it, and don’t analyze it – just write.

What advice would you give a new writer?
Don’t send your work to too many people asking for their opinion, since each one will tell you something different. Trust yourself and your own vision, and let the chips fall where they may.

What other projects do you have in the works at the moment?
I’m currently in the process of developing a new series on the cuckquean theme, based on the idea that the insanely rich have more resources at their disposal that allow them to explore their fetishes with much more gusto than the rest of us.

What are you reading?
The Fling, by Elle J. Lawson. Hot, hot, hot!

What’s the most amusing thing that’s happened to you while you were writing this story? Trying to explain to my editor what a cuckquean is.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla with chocolate syrup.

What is your favorite drink?
Virgin piƱa colada

Who is your dream man and why?
I have so many, but most of them are true scientific nerds. For me, the order of importance is: intelligence, confidence, passion, followed then by a healthy sense of humor. My main crush is Dr. Brian Cox.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?

Please do authors the favor of leaving a review! We rely on your support and feedback, and value each and every one.

On behalf of Simply Sexy Reads, thank you!

Kassandra Wylde lives in the Deep South with her husband of twenty-five years. She has taught English for her local government, and also worked as a professional writer for over two decades. She’s the author of The Mansion Series, The Cuckquean Diaries Series, as well as other standalone novels under various pen names. A reader herself, Kassandra writes in multiple genres, but all of her stories blur the line between fantasy and reality, drawing from Kassandra’s personal life experiences as well as those she can only dream about. Not just erotica, but not strictly romance either, her books provide a contemporary romantic spin on the classic tales of love, lust, and erotic pleasures. Never too sweet; always provocative.
